a first last

It’s the first chase I ever lived all the way to the last line
And it’s the last chase I’ll ever live again for the first time

It’s like going back to the first time you decided to be strong
While knowing you’ve been here all along
Living is more than being born and surviving
It’s being your own definition of thriving

It’s the first chase I ever lived all the way to the last line
And it’s the last chase I’ll ever live again for the first time

An experience is always old and new
Like a flashback and a presence so true
We have memories to remember where we’ve been
And we have vision to envision beyond our skin

It’s the first chase I ever lived all the way to the last line
And it’s the last chase I’ll ever live again for the first time

The now is simply a compilation of all your moments
A mixture of all your seen and unforeseen components
The now meets you a billion times in just a quick instant
But the choice to live is always right here, never distant

It’s the first chase I ever lived all the way to the last line
And it’s the last chase I’ll ever live again for the first time

  1. Oh Grace, these two lines you open with, close with and use as a refrain, are very powerful in an almost mystical way..a mantra to be chanted,
“It’s the first chase I ever lived all the way to the last line
And it’s the last chase I’ll ever live again for the first time”
Whatever stage in our life we become more aware of its subtitles, its patterns and its “rules”
and realize all we have is now, the first will someday be the last, etc, we can begin to live our lives more fully aware and grateful for the fact we are alive!! Nothing more important than that.. I love how deep your thoughts run and how clear you see, ˝Grace …It’s always such a treat to delve into your words… mind:)🌟

    • Awwwww Karima, thank you as always for such a special comment! You are so deeply thoughtful, I’m so lucky to be read by you. So happy you love those two lines, they’re very meaningful to me which is why they repeat 😊. I love how you say “the first will someday be the last”…so wisely said. I had fun playing with firsts being lasts and lasts being firsts. Awwwww ☺️, thank you for delving into my mind 🤗. It’s a treat to share with you. Appreciate you so very much, dear dear friend 🤍🤍🤗🤗

  3. I see love and emotion here, truth too. Every line is superb…we have vision to envision beyond our skin…
And the repetition of I”t’s the first chase I ever …” adds magic to those lines. A marvellous piece of poetry, Grace 😊💖

  4. This is deep and moving stuff, Grace. I love the repeated refrain–so powerful. This line stood out to me: “Living is more than being born and surviving.” I’m stuck on the “surviving” part in my own life, and often wonder if I’ll ever get around to actually “living” instead of merely surviving. You possess a marvelous gift for poetry. This poem is beautiful. 🙂

And thank you for sharing you and your wisdom…I can tell you friend that your writing is very much full of “thriving” and “living”. And the journey to learn to deeply live is where we are living even if it feels like surviving 😊. Awwww you are so very kind, I appreciate you. So happy we connected, thank you for your always amazing comments 🤗🤍
