real life

There’s a reason we write about
invisible feelings and forgotten times
There’s a season we might sprout
if we break the narrative of usual rhymes
We live and experience, succeed and fail
but only we decide the ending of each tale
Just like we write about topics and concepts
we ignore thyself like it’s just nonsense
I wrote about myself last week
and the challenge was unique
I write about the expansiveness of life beyond the sky
like it’s as easy as eating pie
And some say, that’s just the way it goes
writing about thyself has its woes
But to me, it should be a celebration
of what it means to be you, to be creation
So, when I sat down to write today
it started as a reflection of my display
Until I came to a stop and remembered
it wasn’t my truth, just words assembled
So, when I stop typing and reread this
part of me will most likely resist
But when I lean back and read beyond the eyes
most of me will see the progress as the inner prize

-Grace

Author’s Note – Last week, I had to write a bio about myself for a new opportunity…and it was so much tougher than I thought :). Even though I know myself well, to put it into concrete words was not an easy task…I remember thinking “I can write about reality in a million different forms and make it rhyme like it’s nothing but writing about me seems like such a challenge.” So, I knew I needed to dive into this topic today.

If you don’t know what to write about and are looking for a prompt, let this be your sign to write about you. Challenge yourself and celebrate all that you are…it’s an experience we all need to feel a little more. This is titled “real life” because this is real life…facing thyself as who you are not who you were or who you could be.

  1. Quite a challenge you chose for yourself. by dear Grace..As you say so eloquently in your lines, writing about oneself can be the very hardest and especially, “Who am I in this moment of time,? Who is this writer who hunts for words and feels she falls short in her description of her very own being?
“Until I came to a stop and remembered
it wasn’t my truth, just words assembled”
But your conclusion is far from failure..looking beyond the “word words”, you see how you benefited and your “inner prize” was to take a good look inside, something we so rarely do!
You are so right, this introspection is harder than it seems:) I enjoyed how you processed this all the way and your footnote!! Bravo🌹🌟🤗❤️

    • Awww Karima, thank you for this thoughtful comment!!! You are the best, my dear friend. I always feel like you read my words on another level, and it honestly means more than I can express. I’m so happy to hear you love the process of this one and the footnote…it was a personal one so your kindness is deeply appreciated! You never fail to inspire me, Karima. Thank you for being you and for reminding me to keep exploring what’s within 🤍🤗

  2. This poem reminds me of a trainer who asked us to speak about the self for five minutes extempore without talking about the family and organisation. Most of us started fumbling after two minutes. So it’s really tough, as you have so beautifully expressed in your verses. But I appreciate how in the last two lines, you have pieced together the whole thing so eloquently. A lovely poem, Grace, and so relatable 😊💖

  3. Completely agree with your sentiment. Immersing ourselves in our own lyrics that speak of ourselves is more complex than usual, but only we decide the ending of each story and finding ourselves, while rereading ourselves, is a challenge to reach it.
    Hugs, friend Grace.

  4. when I lean back and read beyond the eyes – this is so amazing beautifully said!! Grace your reminder of celebrating our Self is a powerful one in how it comes through you – a reminder of being Creation itself, why deny us the acknowledgement we so willingly pour upon the Universe? And then the dilemma is true about writing our personal Bios out of the very expansive persepectives we can have on hourselves too 🙂

  5. So meaningful Grace!!! Really liked it. It’s really tough for me to understand myself, to understand my strengths and weaknesses and to write them down. But you have presented the experience in a very beautiful manner which is just awesome🤩 Wishing you all the best for your new opportunity sister. 😀
    Thank you

  6. This has to be a new favorite of mine by you, Grace! I truly love how the rhyme here took me along to the next line like I was on a wave that kept touching back to the shore. The ending lines stuck with me too, as I love the idea of reading “beyond the eyes” and all that implies in terms of writing. Simply lovely! ❤

  7. I can understand the challenge to face oneself and write something real and raw. I think I enjoy escaping myself and my own life all too often in my own writing! Sometime we get too attached to the veil in our writing. Love the phrase “read beyond the eyes” and “progress as the inner prize” ‼️ 💗

  8. This is so true Grace. Writing about our own self makes us think about where we are. Self introspect is important. Such amazing words Grace as always 💯❤️🤩😘
