story telling

Used to stare
into the eyes
When that became
disguise
Ignited the inner seeker
one glance into what’s deeper
When that became
perfectly vexing
I went inside
to the mirror reflecting

They call it
people watching
I call it
story telling
There’s a hidden spin
you can stare within
They tell us
it’s only overthinking
But that doesn’t last
just go beyond blinking

One of us
will peek and look away
One of us
will critique and stay
One of us
will shuffle through the whole crowd
One of us
will stare inside even if there’s a cloud
All of us
will look somewhere
But one of us
will go beyond the stare

-Grace

Author’s Note – this was supposed to be about “staring at the ceiling” but it came out a little differently. I love how it came together though. I will be playing around with the staring at the ceiling aspect soon :-). I’ve always been a people watcher and last few years I’ve found a deep peace in staring within, so it only makes sense that I need more than one piece to fit all these lifelong/ever-changing thoughts…more to come :-).

  1. Ohhh that last part really got to me (in a good way) 😉

To go beyond the stare is exactly where I’d love to go. Always love your poetry, Grace. So glad I found your blog. ❤️

  2. Oo, I just love your approach to how people watching is a form of storytelling in how it informs our understanding of the world! The journey from the start to finish of this poem just pulls me right in. ❤

  3. I agree with you Grace..people watching Is story telling, using your creative more than your “over thinking mind” Is creativity not a bit of over thinking in the first place? but whatever, you lay it out and I love the use of italics, for that secondary voice to your repeated “One of us” Just a great vehicle for bringing those points home. And the ending, I too agree with everyone, that it is so good. It feels like a brush with romance, to me, in a crowd of moving strangers, one goes beyond the stare…That’s a great beginning for so much…. you write the rest:) Just a really fabulous poem Grace!!🌹🌈💃🏻

    • Thank you so much, dearest Karima. Oh yes, I totally agree with you that creativity is a bit of that “overthinking”…I think society’s definition of overthinking is untrue and that line was just about going past society’s label (I seem to like tying that in lately 😆). I myself am very much an over-thinker but I like to call it being a free-thinker :). Awww I love your tie in of romance here, I hadn’t thought of it that way but now I can’t read it without tying that in! You’re such a thoughtful reader and supporter, dear friend. Thank you for always sparking a lovely conversation and magic in my mind, appreciate you 🤍🤗

  4. This is fabulous poem on a fantastic idea. People watching had been my pastime too, particularly at a mall, station or airport. But the way you have weaved your observations in such a beautiful poem is beyond my imagination…but one of us will go beyond the stare. It has such a deep reflections that I can’t stop thinking and rethinking. A marvellous poem indeed, Grace 👌💖
